Ingredients
Scale
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound ground turkey
1 large onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
1/2 cup beef broth
1/4 cup raisins
1/4 cup chopped green olives
1 tablespoon capers
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground turkey and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess fat.
Stir in onion, garlic, and green bell pepper. Cook until vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes.
Add diced tomatoes, beef broth, raisins, green olives, capers, cumin, and oregano. Bring to a simmer.
Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until flavors meld and sauce thickens slightly.
Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Serve hot with rice, tortillas, or as a filling for empanadas.
Notes
For a spicier version, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the cumin and oregano.
If you prefer a sweeter picadillo, you can add a tablespoon of brown sugar.
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
Picadillo can also be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
