Ingredients
Scale
1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1/4 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and black pepper to taste
6 hamburger buns, split and toasted
Instructions
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef, onion, and green bell pepper. Cook, breaking up the beef with a spoon, until beef is browned and vegetables are tender, about 8-10 minutes. Drain off any excess fat.
Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder.
Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for at least 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the flavors to meld. For a richer flavor, simmer longer.
Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto toasted hamburger buns and serve immediately.
Notes
For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the other seasonings.
You can prepare the sloppy joe mixture ahead of time and reheat it gently on the stovetop.
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
