Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes combine the classic flavors of a Philly cheesesteak in an easy-to-make sloppy joe format. Ground beef, onions, and peppers are cooked in a savory sauce and served on toasted buns with melted provolone cheese.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 6 hoagie rolls or hamburger buns
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess fat.
  2. Add chopped onion, green bell pepper, and red bell pepper to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Stir in minced garlic, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  4. Pour in beef broth, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened.
  5. While the sloppy joe mixture simmers, toast the hoagie rolls or hamburger buns.
  6. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted buns.
  7. Top each sloppy joe with a slice of provolone cheese. You can place them under a broiler for a minute or two until the cheese is melted and bubbly, or simply let the heat from the meat melt the cheese.
  8. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the garlic.
  • You can use other types of cheese like cheddar or American cheese.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
