This American Goulash recipe is a comfort food classic. It features ground beef, macaroni, and a rich tomato sauce, all cooked in one pot for easy cleanup. It’s a hearty and satisfying meal that’s perfect for a weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add chopped onion to the pot and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  3. Stir in tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  4. Add the uncooked elbow macaroni to the pot and stir to combine.
  5. Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the macaroni is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  6. Remove from heat. If desired, sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese and cover for a few minutes until melted.
  7. Serve hot.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a bay leaf to the sauce while it simmers, then remove it before serving.
  • If you prefer a spicier goulash, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the other seasonings.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
  • This recipe can be easily doubled to feed a larger crowd.
