This classic 1-2-3-4 cake recipe is a simple and versatile dessert, perfect for any occasion. It’s a foundational recipe that can be easily adapted with different frostings and fillings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sifted all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  6. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before inverting them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Once cooled, frost with your favorite frosting.

Notes

  • Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for best results.
  • Do not overmix the batter; this can lead to a tough cake.
  • For a richer flavor, use buttermilk instead of whole milk.
  • This cake can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
