Candied sweet potatoes are a classic side dish, especially popular during holidays. This recipe creates tender sweet potatoes glazed with a buttery, sugary syrup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch thick rounds
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Arrange sweet potato rounds in a single layer in a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together melted butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, water, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. Pour the sugar mixture evenly over the sweet potatoes.
  5. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.
  6. Bake for 30 minutes.
  7. Remove foil and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes, or until sweet potatoes are tender and glazed, basting occasionally with the syrup.
  8. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of ground cloves or ginger to the sugar mixture.
  • If you prefer a thicker syrup, you can reduce the sauce on the stovetop for a few minutes after baking.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
