Ingredients
Scale
1 pound ground beef
1 large onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
1 (15 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
12 ounces bowtie pasta
15 ounces ricotta cheese
1 large egg
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
Brown ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain excess fat.
Add onion and garlic to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
Stir in tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and cook for 15 minutes.
Cook bowtie pasta according to package directions. Drain well.
In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and Parmesan cheese.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Spread 1/3 of the meat sauce in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Layer with half of the cooked bowtie pasta.
Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture over the pasta.
Sprinkle with 1 cup of mozzarella cheese.
Repeat layers: 1/3 meat sauce, remaining pasta, remaining ricotta mixture, and 1 cup mozzarella cheese.
Top with the remaining meat sauce.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until bubbly and cheese is melted and lightly browned.
Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
You can add vegetables like bell peppers or mushrooms to the meat sauce for extra flavor and nutrition.
For a vegetarian option, omit the ground beef and use extra vegetables or a plant-based meat substitute.
